First time working as a nurse on Christmas Day? While it can be hard being away from family and friends on such a special day, it’s important to remember the positive difference you are making to the people who need it most. In this blog, we look at what nurses can typically expect when taking on a 25th December jobbie.
Emotions will run high
Being in hospital is never nice, especially on a day like Christmas when the rest of the world is celebrating and out being merry. While you’re also probably missing your family and friends, remember some of your patients may be dealing with difficult diagnoses, or an ongoing family illness which can make the atmosphere emotionally charged. So even if you’re exhausted and ready to go home and eat roast potatoes, remember that for some of your patients, this isn’t an option - so be kind!
Short-staffed shifts
Some healthcare facilities may experience staffing shortages during holidays, which can increase your workload and responsibilities.
Special celebrations for patients
Some hospitals organise special events or celebrations for patients on holidays. You may be involved in coordinating or participating in these activities to bring a sense of holiday cheer to the healthcare environment.
Supportive team atmosphere
Working over Christmas often creates a strong sense of camaraderie among the healthcare team. Many colleagues understand the sacrifices made by working during holidays, and there's often mutual support.
Balancing personal and professional commitments
It can be challenging to balance your professional commitments with personal ones during the holidays. If possible, communicate with your family and friends about your work schedule and find ways to celebrate together before or after your shift.
Self-care
Working during the holidays can be emotionally and physically demanding. Practice self-care by taking short breaks, staying hydrated, and finding moments to recharge and enjoy yourself.
Here at MCM Medical we’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Take care of yourselves! If you need further career advice or would like to speak to one of our dedicated consultants then feel free to get in touch on 0203 929 4010.
