Updates from the picket line

Members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) will be joined by ambulance staff in another day of strike action on Monday, 6 February.

This marks the biggest walkout yet, as it is the first time both parties will be striking on the same day.

The decision was made after RCN members across the UK acted on 18 and 19 January but still failed to enter pay negotiations with Rishi Sunak.

Nurses are striking for fairer pay (5% above inflation) to compensate for the cost of living crisis.

The government hit back saying that this request, which would equate to almost a 19% increase, is unreasonable considering the current state of the UK economy.

Pat Cullen, the RCN general secretary and chief executive, responded that the union is open to meet in the middle, and accept a 10% pay rise, adding:

“People aren’t dying because nurses are striking. Nurses are striking because people are dying. That is how severe things are in the NHS and it is time the prime minister led a fight for its future.”

MCM Medical supports nurses and healthcare professionals taking part in the strike action. We hope you get the outcome you deserve.
