From rainbow badges, to the LGBT+ action plan, we’ve seen significant progress within the NHS when it comes to supporting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) community. Unfortunately however, it is event that we still have a long way to go. In this article, we share some ideas on how to make your workplace more inclusive for fellow healthcare staff and patients.
Be open
Being open about LGBTQ+ issues is essential to providing support, education and delivering improved policies. This means speaking up if you hear an offensive comment, and explaining why the language used or joke made etc. was not acceptable. If you experience verbal or physical abuse because of your sexual orientation - whether from a colleague or a patient - make sure to tell your superior as soon as possible and remove yourself from the situation if you feel you are in immediate danger
Educate yourself
It is crucial that you take the time to research LGBTQ+ issues where you are uncertain, before bombarding your colleagues/friends/family with questions. Whilst it’s good to be curious and want to learn, it may come across as insensitive if you rely on the LGBTQ+ to educate you on their history and struggles. For some, it may even be emotionally triggering - so make sure you take the responsibility to educate yourself.
Promote inclusivity
In order to create a happy and productive work environment, it is essential that everyone feels included. Your trust should aim to implement the following (if it hasn’t already!):
Inclusive policies which explicitly mention LGBTQ+
Raise awareness of LGBTQ+ staff and patient issues
Organise activities and events for LGBTQ+ staff
Set up a support group
Designated member of staff/safe point of contact to go to for LGBTQ+ related concerns/issues
Educational posters
MCM Medical is proud to be an LGBTQ+ ally and celebrates all the fantastic initiatives we’ve seen from the NHS over the years.
We look forward to seeing a future where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation can feel safe, secure and genuinely happy in their work environment.
