Shifting gear: how to prepare for a role in nursing

About to start your first nursing role? Carry on reading to find out our top tips on how to prepare for your first role in nursing!

Be open to learning

Starting your first nursing role can be very exciting, but there’s also a lot to learn! That’s why it’s important to always ask questions where you’re unsure - after all, it’s better than staying quiet and then making mistakes down the line. Remember your mentor is there to provide support and answer any queries should you need! Make the most of them.

Build rapport with your team

Building rapport with your team as a nurse is crucial as it fosters effective communication, enhances collaboration and teamwork, nurtures trust and support, increases job satisfaction, reduces burnout, and ultimately leads to improved patient care. When nurses establish strong relationships with their colleagues, they can rely on each other, share responsibilities, and work cohesively towards a common goal, ensuring the best possible outcomes for their patients. This positive work environment allows for adaptability and flexibility in responding to changes, creating a supportive network that can help you with the demands of your profession and maintain a high standard of care.

Get organised

In order to provide safe and effective care, you need to be organised. This includes things like having a notepad in your pouch, ordering tasks based on priority and using a planner so you know where you need to be and where. Being organised also means maintaining clear communication with both your patients and your colleagues so everyone is on the same page and nothing important flies under the radar.

Take time to unwind

While nursing is an incredibly rewarding career, it can also be highly stressful at times. To combat this stress, it is essential that nursing professionals remember to take some time out for themselves (when/if possible!). Self-care can be anything from listening to your favourite podcast on the commute, to booking yourself a little staycation. Try and spend at least an hour a day doing something that helps you relax and re-centre.
