Second round of nursing strikes could be on the horizon

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) have announced that further nursing strikes on 18 and 19 January are looking likely.

An even greater number of nurses than before are expected to participate in the upcoming strikes over NHS pay.

The news comes following two days of strike action that took place up and down the country on 15 and 20 December. Hundreds of thousands of healthcare staff attended to have their voice heard.

Patricia Marquis, Director at the RCN commented from the picket line on December 20: “I think sadly it looks like we will have strike dates in January, and possibly February.

“That’s a massively sad indictment on this country and the government, that when you can see what nurses are saying, really loud and clear that it's not good enough, it’s not right, it’s not just about pay, it’s about safe staffing… and yet we can’t even get a conversation.”

Pat Cullen, head of the RCN, emphasised that the union has been left with “no choice” but to organise a second round of strikes.

"The government had the opportunity to end this dispute before Christmas but instead they have chosen to push nursing staff out into the cold again in January," she added.

Despite growing pressures, the conservative party is still yet to enter talks with the union.

Here at MCM Medical, we support the continuing nurse strikes and hope to see increased pay for our wonderful healthcare workers.
