Pronouns and why they matter in healthcare settings

In this blog, we explore why pronouns matter for NHS staff and their patients - as well as how to use pronouns correctly as a nursing professional.

Why do pronouns matter?

Using the correct pronouns is an essential part of respecting a patient's identity and dignity. Misgendering or using the wrong pronouns can be a source of distress, especially for transgender and gender-diverse patients. When healthcare providers use the right pronouns, it sends a clear message that they acknowledge and respect a patient's gender identity.

Furthermore, we all know being in the hospital is already anxiety-inducing, let’s not make it worse. Create a safe and inclusive environment for each patient by respecting their gender identity.

How to use pronouns effectively:

1.Ask and listen

The best way to ensure you're using the right pronouns is to ask the patient directly. When introducing yourself, you can say something like, "Hi, I'm [Your Name], and my pronouns are [Your pronouns]. What are your pronouns?" This normalises the sharing of pronouns and allows the patient to express their identity comfortably.

2. Document pronouns

Include a space for pronouns in patient records to ensure your colleagues are aware of the correct pronouns to use. Not only is this effective for respectful care, but also means patients won’t get fed up with multiple members of staff asking for their preferred pronouns.

3.Educate and train

Your workplace can provide training and educational resources for staff to increase awareness of the importance of pronouns in healthcare. This training can also address common misconceptions and biases related to gender identity.

For further insight into this topic, make sure to read Dr Jamie Willo’s fantastic blog which details their experience with asking people to use the correct pronouns and why it needs to become common practice in healthcare settings.
