Preparing for a virtual nursing interview in 5 easy steps

Big nursing interview on the horizon? Not sure how to prepare because it’s your first virtual one? How can you land a job through a screen?! If this sounds like your current situation, then don’t panic - we’ve got your back! Carry on reading for our consultants’ top tips for preparing for a virtual nursing interview in five easy steps…

1.Clear background

Ahead of your interview, it’s a good idea to decide where you’ll be sat so you can make sure there is nothing distracting in the background. If possible, find a quiet room with lots of natural light and a plain wall (your prospective employer probably doesn’t want to see your housemates making breakfast!).

2. Good posture & body language

Despite being a virtual interview, body language is still something you need to take into consideration. Make sure you’re sitting up straight at a desk or table, and remember to make eye contact with the camera to project confidence and professionalism.

3.Post-it notes are your friend

One of the perks of interviewing virtually is that you can use written prompts to help you out! Now, this has to be done subtly in order to work - i.e. it shouldn’t be obvious that you are reading nor should you write yourself a script to follow word-for-word. Instead, jot down your key points on post-it notes and stick them around your computer screen. This way, you can still maintain eye contact with the interviewer while having your written prompts in plain sight, should you need them.

4.Noise control

Whether you live with your family, friends or partner, make sure to tell them when your interview is and which room you’ll be doing it in so they know not to disturb you. Also be aware of external factors such as neighbours and roadworks, for example. Find your quietest room and test your sound before the interview begins to ensure your microphone is working and there isn’t any off-putting background noise.

5.Radiate confidence (or fake it ‘till you make it!)

Overall, if you can nail coming across as assertive and confident in your abilities as a nurse then you’re already halfway there! Even if you’re fresh out of university, it’s all about believing in yourself and letting your enthusiasm for medicine shine through. Before you join the call, take a deep breath in and visualise yourself wowing the interviewer. We know it sounds a little silly but we promise it works wonders for your confidence!
