In this blog, we share five helpful tips for reducing your carbon footprint as a nurse. Carry on reading to find out how you can do your part in making the medical world that bit greener.
1. Minimise waste
Did you know that the NHS generates around 538,600 tonnes of waste a year? Where possible, nurses can help to reduce this waste by opting for more sustainable supplies such as washable patient gowns, reusable blood pressure cuffs and encouraging patients to return items such as crutches which can be disinfected and reused.
If not already implemented, recycling programmes should be established at your place of practice. These recycling points are most effective when clearly labelled and easily accessible throughout the hospital or healthcare establishment in question.
2. Proper medication disposal
Educate patients and staff about the importance of proper medication disposal. Encourage them to return unused or expired medications to designated collection sites to prevent environmental contamination.
3. Adopt energy-efficient practices
By adopting energy-efficient practices, you can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of your workplace. Here are a few strategies to consider:
a. Energy-conscious lighting: Switch to energy-efficient lighting solutions such as LED bulbs. Encourage colleagues to turn off lights when not in use and utilize natural lighting whenever possible.
b. Water conservation: Encourage responsible water usage by turning off faucets when not needed and reporting any leaks or water wastage promptly.
c. Reduce energy consumption: Power down or unplug non-essential equipment when not in use. Set computer monitors and other devices to sleep mode to conserve energy.
4. Make the switch to sustainable transportation
An easy way to reduce your carbon footprint is by changing the way you travel to work. For example, you could consider walking to work (if you live nearby) rather than driving - or make the commute using public transport. Not only are these options more sustainable, but can also help boost your mental and physical wellbeing.
5. Educate and advocate
Educate your colleagues, patients, and their families about sustainable practices and their impact on health and the environment. Advocate for policy changes within your healthcare facility to prioritise sustainability initiatives, such as reducing plastic waste, sourcing eco-friendly products, and implementing green energy solutions.
