You’ve just completed your nursing degree - congratulations! But now your first day in practice is rapidly approaching and you’re not sure how to feel or what to do. Sound familiar? Carry on reading for our top three tips for navigating the transition from student to professional nurse.
1. Be curious
During your first few shifts (or even weeks), there will a lot to learn and naturally, you’ll be curious about everything from learning how to use certain tools to the best spot to get a sandwich near your hospital/practice Take your time and ask questions where you aren’t sure or need more information. Remember, it’s always better to ask than to find yourself in a pickle down the line. It was everybody’s first day once so they’ll be more than willing to help out a new face.
2. Take it easy on yourself
While it’s good to hit the ground running, it’s imperative you don’t run before you can walk (how many running idioms and contradictions can we fit in here?!). What we’re trying to say is do your best, but don’t overdo it and burn out in week one! If you rush then something is bound to go wrong, so take your time and learn from the experts around you.
3. Find a way to unwind
We would be lying if we said nursing isn’t hard work - it is. But it can also be extremely rewarding too (probably the reason you went into the profession in the first place). That’s why finding a healthy work-life balance is non-negotiable when it comes to starting your career in nursing. Find something that helps your brain ‘switch off’ after shifts so you can enjoy your downtime without thoughts of work worming their way in. Whether this be reading a book, going for a run or binge-watching Selling Sunset (we won’t judge) - anything that allows you to put the stressors of your day behind you is prescribed!
