In any profession, it is crucial to maintain a healthy work-life balance to ensure mental wellbeing and perform at your best, but as a nurse it is an absolute priority. From late night shifts, long hours and lack of breaks, to being on constant high-alert and dealing with emergencies on a daily basis, it’s no wonder self-care can often take a backseat in the nursing world. Carry on reading for guidance from our knowledgeable recruitment team on how to establish a healthy work-life balance as a practising nurse.
Put time aside to do something you enjoy
We know it can seem almost impossible to relax after a 12 hour shift in A&E, but it is so important to switch-off when you get home and allow your mind to rid itself of work-related stressors. Get into a routine of changing into relaxing clothes when you return from a shift, and doing something that makes you happy.
Exercise
Whether it’s doing a HIIT workout, or getting off the bus a stop earlier and walking the rest of your journey, fitting exercise into your daily routine is fantastic for both your physical and mental wellbeing.
Seek support
If you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, speak to your manager or a trusted colleague about what support is available to you.
Use your breaks at work
“What breaks!?”, we hear you scream in disbelief at your screen. Hear us out - we know you’re run off your feet, but even 30 seconds of deep breathing between seeing patients can make a world of difference. Where there is an opportunity for more than half a minute’s break, try and get yourself outside and fill your lungs with that fresh air!
Reward yourself
It may sound silly, but sometimes having something to look forward to, no matter how small, can help get you through a tough day. Plan to see your friends often, buy yourself chocolate on Fridays - whatever it is that boosts your mood, we prescribe it!
