As the new year edges closer, it’s time to consider what the medical landscape is shaping up to look like. In this blog, we explore potential healthcare trends for 2023 so you can consider whether nursing could be the next logical step in your career.
AI to transform the sector
From patient care, to staffing shortages, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to completely revolutionise the healthcare sector in 2023. Take machine learning, for instance, which has the ability to improve patient outcomes by drawing on previous medical records. This means doctors and nurses can make better informed decisions when it comes to choosing the best treatment. Google is already demonstrating the endless possibilities of AI for healthcare, having recently created a technology that can predict the outcome of hospital visits. The aim of this development is to reduce hospital stays and mitigate the risk of readmission. Indeed, this is just the tip of the iceberg for artificial intelligence - so watch this space!
An increased focus on mental health
The Covid-19 pandemic shed light on the worsening mental health crisis in the UK, as many of the population adjusted to life in isolation while others sadly lost their jobs. However, due to additional strain on health services, mental health resources grew sparse. We are now seeing an increased focus on mental health as the world returns to normal - especially in the workplace. Progress is already being made with the NHS being given £150 million in funding over the next 3 years to help boost mental health services and improve support being offered to those in need.
Improvements to the patient experience
Creating a more seamless experience for patients visiting A&E, routine appointments and GP check ups are on the priority list for the new year. Technology will be at the forefront of this transformation and will allow patients to have more autonomy over their care (a good example being the NHS app).
Staffing solutions
As we are all painstakingly aware, healthcare services are in desperate need of more staff to keep up with demand. Data from March 2022 shows that 105,855 health services posts were unfilled in the UK. In order to help combat the staffing crisis, the government has confirmed that those who have left the healthcare service will now be eligible to rejoin the pension scheme. It is hoped that this will make working for the NHS more attractive and ultimately, help fill staffing gaps. The Chancellor announced in his autumn statement that an official workforce plan which will address staffing shortages in the NHS will be published next year.
