Considering a career in nursing?

Considering a career in nursing? In this blog we answer some essential questions so you can decide if it’s the right path for you.

Which qualifications do I need under my belt?

In most cases, you will need a nursing degree to become a practising nurse. While each university course differs when it comes to entry requirements, you will usually be expected to have three A levels and the relevant GCSEs (A to C) including maths, science and english. Find out which courses are available via the UCAS website.

How much will I earn as a nurse?

As a newly qualified nurse in England and Wales, you will earn around £24,214 per annum, this will obviously increase as you progress through your nursing career - with nursing directors and senior midwives earning up to £80,000 at the top end of the scale.

What skills do I need as a nurse?

Becoming a nurse requires a diverse set of skills to provide compassionate and effective patient care. First and foremost, excellent communication skills are crucial, as nurses interact with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential for making quick and accurate decisions in dynamic healthcare environments. Empathy and compassion enable nurses to connect with patients on a personal level, fostering trust and comfort. Strong organisational skills are necessary to manage multiple tasks, prioritise responsibilities, and handle unexpected challenges. Technical proficiency in using medical equipment and understanding healthcare technologies is also vital. Adaptability and resilience are key, as nurses often work in fast-paced and emotionally demanding situations. Continuous learning and a commitment to staying updated on medical advancements contribute to the ongoing development of a successful nursing career.
