Christmas on the ward: top tips

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, being a nurse over the festive season can be stressful. Juggling family obligations, patient care and self-care is certainly not for the faint hearted, and although you’re probably an expert at it by now, we’ve got some top tips for those spending Christmas on the ward...

Deck the halls

Get together with your colleagues and decorate the ward with Christmas decorations! Not only will this boost staff morale, but also act as a comfort for patients who may feel anxious in a hospital setting. We recommend getting an artificial tree so you don’t end up finding a pine needle in your coffee!

Set boundaries

It’s easy to overexert yourself over the holiday season, especially when you’re trying to keep up with your friends and attend every Christmas event going in your spare time. Setting boundaries, both at work and with your friends/family is paramount to having a healthy work-life balance - whether that’s saying no to swapping shifts, or moving plans with friends, make sure you prioritise yourself so you don’t end up running on empty!

Self-care is king

From working round the clock, to prepping for Christmas celebrations and finding time to spend with loved ones, you’re going to be run off your feet over the festive period. Taking good care of your wellbeing during this time is therefore more critical than usual, and will ensure you don’t get burned out during this exciting - but equally exhausting - time of year.

Ideas for self-care:

  • Having a relaxing bath

  • Making time to exercise

  • Reading a book or watching a TV show you enjoy

  • Cooking your favourite food

  • Getting a good night's sleep!

Celebrate with your patients

It’s tough being in hospital at the best of times, but it can be especially difficult around Christmas time. Patients might be missing their families or feel sad that they’re unable to spend time with their friends who are out enjoying the festivities. As a nurse, it’s important to be empathetic - and going the extra mile can really help make a difference. Try talking to patients about their Christmas traditions (or other family traditions if they don’t celebrate Christmas). This will help them feel less lonely, particularly if they haven’t had many visitors. Playing carols, dressing up or sharing out some Christmas goodies may also help raise spirits…
