This week marks Cancer Prevention Action Week - an annual event which raises awareness of lifestyle changes that mitigate the risk of cancer.
With 40% of all cancers recognised as preventable, it is important we are all educated on the risk factors, symptoms and the lifestyle choices we can make to stay healthy.

What is the theme for Cancer Prevention Awareness Week 2023?
This year, Cancer Prevention Awareness Week is focused on cutting down on processed meats, which can cause bowel cancer if consumed on the regular.
What counts as processed meat?
Sausages
Hot dogs
Chicken nuggets
Bacon
Salami
Ham
Pepperoni
Chorizo
Beef jerky
Sliced luncheon meats
Why does red meat cause cancer?
A lot of meat we consume contains chemicals such as nitrates and nitrites which are added to help preserve it. However, these substances do not get on well with the human body and increase your chances of developing bowel cancer. Red meats are also bad for our health in general, thanks to being so high in salt and saturated fat.
What alternatives can I recommend to my patients?
Plant-based options are a great substitute for red meats and there’s plenty to choose from nowadays!
Meat doesn’t have to be at the centre of your meals. Why not try a halloumi curry? Or a roasted veg pasta bake?
If you don’t want to give up red meat, try reducing your intake or replacing it with chicken or fish.
Symptoms of bowel cancer:
Abdominal pains
Frequent bathroom visits
Passing running stools
It is advised to see a medical professional if you experience these symptoms for 3+ weeks.
As a nurse, it is important to share these symptoms and advocate healthy lifestyle choices using your platform as a healthcare professional. Remind your practice that it’s Cancer Prevention Action Week and suggest putting up posters if you haven’t already.
