AI to help improve brain surgery

Artifiial intelligence is helping improve the precision of keyhole brain surgery, reports leading neurosurgeon.

While still under development at University College London, we can expect to see the technology rolled out over the next two years.

It works by detecting small tumours and critical essential anatomical features such as the blood vessels in the brain's core.

Benefits of using AI when performing brain surgery

Performing brain surgery demands precision and meticulous care, as even a slight deviation in the wrong direction can result in immediate patient fatality.

Safeguarding the pituitary gland, which is approximately the size of a grape and situated in the center of the brain, holds paramount importance.

This gland regulates the body's hormone functions, and any complications involving it can lead to blindness.

Experienced surgeons have said working in collaboration with AI has allowed them to be more accurate when it comes to removing tumours.

In fact, the artificial intelligence system has alreadyaquired the skills it would take a neurosguren over a decade to learn, in just ten months.

"You could, in a few years, have an AI system that has seen more operations than any human has ever or could ever see,” adds Hani Marcus, neurosurgery consultant atNational Hospital for Neurology and neurosurgery.

Trainee Dr Nicola Newell said she finds it “very helpful”.

"It helps me orientate myself during mock surgery and helps identify what steps and what stages are coming up next,” she explained.

Minister for artificial intelligence Viscount Camrose commented: "AI makes everybody massively more productive whatever it is you do.

"It kind of almost makes you the Marvel superhero version of yourself."

He described the technology as “very promising” in terms of improving patient outcomes and says it could be a game-changer for the healthcare sector.

Here at MCM Medical we are super excited to see this technology being rolled out to improve patient outcomes.
