Adapting to night shift work: a guide for nurses

Adapting to night shift work as a newbie nurse can be challenging considering the demanding nature of nursing, as well as the disruption to your natural sleep pattern. That’s why we’ve put together this short guide to help you navigate night shift work as a nurse!

Establish a consistent sleep routine

Set a regular sleep schedule, even on your days off, to help regulate your circadian rhythm. Obviously, this isn’t always possible with shift work but keeping it as regular as possible will make a noticeable difference to your tiredness levels.

We also recommend using blackout curtains and/or a sleep mask to block out sunlight.

Don’t get carried away with the caffeine!

While it’s fine (and probably necessary!) to have a cheeky coffee before you head to work, make sure to limit caffeine intake towards the end of your shift to avoid disrupting your sleep.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

When your job is to look after other people, it can be easy to neglect your own basic needs. However, it is vital you remember to drink water consistently throughout your night shift to stay hydrated and maintain your alertness!

Invest in some blue light glasses

We’ve all heard of Blue Light discount…but what about blue light glasses? Sadly the two are not related, but wearing blue-light-blocking glasses while using screens during you night shift/before bed will help you get a better sleep. This is because blue light has been shown to keep people awake longer as your brain thinks it’s still daylight.

Opt for healthy snacks

In the middle of the night during a busy shift, you may find yourself naturally gravitating towards the vending machine for a quick pick-me-up. While the initial sugar rush will give you the energy you’re craving, you will eventually crash and feel a lot, lot worse.

Instead, opt for balanced, nutrient-rich meals and snacks throughout your shift to maintain energy levels. Preparing meals and snack boxes ahead of time will help you stay fulfilled throughout your shift and stop you from reaching for that vending machine Mars bar!

Get everyone onboard

Make sure to tell your family/partner/housemates when you’ll be catching some zzz’s ahead of your night shift, so they know to keep it down! There’s nothing worse than dozing off, only to be awakened by someone hoovering outside your room or crashing pots and pans in the kitchen…
