It’s national veggie month, so we thought we’d share 3 health benefits of giving up meat that you can share with your colleagues and patients - or whoever you think might want to get involved!
1.Reduces the risk of cancer
Did you know that those who follow a plant-based diet are less likely to develop cancer?
This is because meat (especially red meat) is high in saturated fat and salt, as well as containing harmful preservatives.
Vegetarians/vegans with a balanced diet also tend to consume more than the recommended 5-a-day in fruit and vegetables. That means more antioxidants, which have been shown to reduce the risk of certain cancers.
2.Lowers blood pressure
High blood pressure is serious and can cause a range of life-threatening issues such as heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular disease. That’s why it’s vital to keep your blood pressure down, and going veggie is one easy way to do so. Research has shown that herbivores tend to have lower blood pressure levels than their fellow carnivore friends.
3. Promotes bone health
It was discovered that countries where people consume a mostly vegetarian diet had a lower rate of osteoporosis cases. There are two reasons for this:
The more fruit and veg you consume, the more magnesium and potassium you get in your diet - both of which encourage bone metabolism.
Meat and dairy products can interfere with calcium in your body and leave it with less than it started with.
Keep those bones strong and try incorporating some Linda McCartney into your meals!
