10,000+ nurses off with long Covid: push for post-pandemic sick pay

Nurses are urging the UK government to provide financial support to those unable to work due to long Covid.

The petition, which has received more than 150,000 signatures, calls for ‘full compensation’ for key workers who fell ill with coronavirus while working during the pandemic.

Unfortunately, as many as 10,000 are still not well enough to return to work, leaving them in a sticky financial situation.

While nurses absent with Covid-19 received full pay during their time off, sick pay has since reverted back to the standard, pre-pandemic amount.

Staff who have worked under the NHS for more than five years are being given an extended six months of extended pay, followed by six months of half pay starting on March 5, 2023.

After these six months are up, pay will come to a complete halt.

This is putting thousands of nurses in an “awful financial situation”, says Cass Macdonald, one of the nurses who started the petition.

“Covid and long Covid have taken and are taking absolutely everything from me", she told the Nursing Times.

MCM Medical supports the petition and urges everyone to sign it here.
